What to expect

Winchester and Eastbourne provide choice, while many downland villages have one pub or shop. The Beech Cafe at the Sustainability Centre confirms vegetarian and vegan food directly on the route, and the Eight Bells at Jevington marks vegan dishes. Arrange rural dinners and breakfasts in advance, and carry a cold meal through the quieter middle.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

At Jevington, use the Eight Bells' current vegan markings rather than chasing banoffee-pie history. Watercress and local fruit are useful shop food when actually stocked. Middle Farm offers a large cider and perry selection, but ask which drinks are vegan because fining varies. Sussex wine also needs a producer statement rather than an assumption from the grapes.

What to buy

Winchester is the strongest start shop. Petersfield is a useful detour, Upper Beeding is the central top-up, and Alfriston covers the approach to Eastbourne. Co-op's current vegan range is Co-op Plant Based, but stock varies in small branches. Carry wraps, hummus or beans, nuts, fruit, oat milk and a no-cook dinner rather than depending on one village pub.

Good places on the trail

Winchester: several city venues have current vegan-directory or tourism-board leads; check the operator before relying on one for an early start. East Meon: the Beech Cafe's own page confirms vegetarian and vegan food, soup, hot specials and vegan cake on limited weekly hours. Saddlescombe Farm: Wildflour is a secondary lead for vegan breakfast, lunch and cakes. Jevington: the Eight Bells' current menu marks vegan dishes. Lewes is an optional rail detour from Southease with stronger town choice. Eastbourne: the Good Grub is listed as fully vegan, but reviewers report changing hours; confirm before walking across town. Most route-side pubs do not publish a specific vegan meal, so contact the one attached to your overnight stop.

Trail treats

Choose the Beech Cafe's labelled vegan cake or a clearly marked item in town. Do not assume a village cream tea or banoffee pie has been made without dairy.

Where to restock

Eastbound, shop fully in Winchester, use Petersfield if your stage allows the detour, then top up at Upper Beeding and Alfriston. Westbound, leave Eastbourne supplied and use the same points in reverse. Southease rail access makes Lewes a fallback, not an on-route shop. Keep breakfast and a cold dinner for any night where the accommodation has not confirmed vegan catering.

Things that may not be vegan

Check butter and egg in pastry or desserts, meat stock in soup and gravy, honey glazes, shared fryers, and animal-derived finings in cider, wine or cask beer.
