Accommodation planning
South Downs Way accommodation: where to stay and how to plan it
Trailstrider's current research covers 55 places along or near the South Downs Way. Availability still depends on your exact dates and stage pattern, so choose the itinerary first and check the whole trip together.
What makes accommodation planning different here
Ordinary inns, farmhouse B&Bs and farm campsites, each booked direct with its owner. There is no hut system, nothing is packaged, and no single operator covers more than one stop. What actually shapes a plan here is that the route holds the chalk ridge and deliberately misses the villages, so most beds sit below the escarpment. Budget one to three km each way and 100 to 150 m of descent on top of the day, then the climb back in the morning. Some owners will meet you at a lane crossing if you ask when you book: Corhampton Lane Farm collects walkers from Exton at the end of the day and runs them to the pub and back, and Holt House at Washington lists a pick-up service and a lift into the village among what it offers. The beds actually on the ridge or on the route are the ones to book first, because there are so few: YHA Truleigh Hill, Saddlescombe Farm campsite, Manor Farm at Cocking (about 100 m off the trail), Gumber Bothy on the Slindon estate, South Downs Bunkhouse and Arun Valley B&B where the trail crosses the Arun at Houghton, Housedean Farm at Falmer, YHA South Downs at Southease and Saltmarsh Farmhouse at Exceat. Direct with each place, by phone, email or the operator's own booking page. The two hostels are the exception and go through YHA's national system. Campsites mostly take an online booking through their own shop and several are relaxed about a walk-in as well. At least one village inn and one campsite ask for two nights across a weekend, which is the commonest reason a listed bed turns out to be unbookable for a single Saturday, so check that before building an itinerary around it. Rates are the weak spot here: most of the small places researched on this trail publish no nightly figure at all, so budgeting means ringing round rather than reading websites. Camping on this trail means a booked site. The Downs are farmed and enclosed the whole way, and there is no open-camping tradition. Sites that suit a walker are spread unevenly and several charge per person rather than per pitch, which suits a solo walker and penalises a pair. Saddlescombe Farm is tents only, walk-in only and limited to two nights. Gumber Bothy on the Slindon estate takes tents as well as bothy beds and has no vehicle access at all, so it is one of the few places on the route where everyone in the field walked or cycled in. Establish that a site takes tents at all before counting on it: two of the mapped sites on this route are caravan parks whose own pages never mention a tent. Campsites carry the seasonality. Saddlescombe Farm runs 1 April to 30 September, Gumber Bothy 1 March to 31 October, Southdown at Small Dole keeps touring pitches April to October, and Washington and Blackberry Wood are open all year. Inns and hostels trade year round, though hostel cafe hours shrink out of season. Winchester and Eastbourne both have direct rail services, and the middle is unusually well served: Southease station is on the route where it crosses the Ouse, and Falmer, Amberley, Hassocks and Lewes are all a short walk or bus from it. That makes a plan here recoverable in a way most long trails are not, and it is why a bed two miles off the ridge beside a station can beat one on it. The field that decides a plan on this trail is how far off the route a place is, and whether the owner will collect you. Most owners in the villages below the scarp will answer both on the phone, and some will drive up to a lane crossing, but very few publish either. Where a place does say, it is recorded on the property. Where it does not, treat the map distance as the walk you will do twice.

Examples along the route
These are researched examples, not live availability. The planner checks your chosen dates and keeps alternatives visible.
The Old Vine
Six rooms over a pub facing the cathedral close, in the middle of the city rather than out by the station.
no room rate published on their own site, seen 31 Jul 2026The Bucks Head
16th-century riverside inn with rooms by the church green and the River Meon. Listed here as Exton, but the pub's address is Meonstoke, the twin village just across the river, so do not expect it in Exton itself.
GBP 115 single occupancy, GBP 140 double or twin, per night, seen 30 Jul 2026Moonlight Cottage
Grade II-listed flint-and-brick 1815 cottage guest house right on the South Downs Way, purpose-suited to walkers with bag drop-off/pick-up and packed lunches
no nightly rate published, seen 30 Jul 2026Amberley Castle
luxury Relais & Chateaux castle hotel behind a 60-foot curtain wall, 900+ years of history — very much a destination/special-occasion hotel, not a plain walker's overnight stop
no nightly rate published, seen 30 Jul 2026Old Tollgate Hotel & Restaurant
16-room roadside hotel at the foot of the South Downs; currently mid-transition, running as B&B-only while the main house is renovated
no nightly rate published, seen 30 Jul 2026YHA Truleigh Hill (duplicate map object)
Not a separate campsite: the camping at YHA Truleigh Hill, recorded a second time about thirty metres from the hostel building (way/365077500).
The Half Moon
Pub at the foot of the scarp below Plumpton Plain with shepherd's huts and a camping field behind it, so dinner and bed are in the same place.
no rate published on the pub's own site, seen 31 Jul 2026YHA South Downs
Converted farm on the trail where it crosses the Ouse, with Southease station, in YHA's own words, 'literally on the hostel's doorstep'. The obvious bed for this stop.
no rate shown without entering dates, seen 31 Jul 2026Star Inn (duplicate building outline)
Not a separate hotel: an unnamed tourism=hotel building outline about thirty metres from the Star Inn (node/288921808) and part of the same complex.
Foxhole Campsite and Camping Barn
A walk-in field and barn a mile into the country park. Worth knowing about mainly so that you do not arrive expecting to pitch.
