What to expect

This is a half-board route where vegan requests can still be refused or reduced to vegetarian food. Put the full exclusion list in every booking, obtain confirmation and carry protein plus a cold dinner. Le Peuty confirms vegan catering, Relais d'Arpette's current official booking record confirms vegan dinner on request, and several other huts accept advance dietary notes without promising a vegan meal.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

Valais rye bread is protected as flour, water, yeast and salt, and Cenovis states that its yeast spread is vegan; together they make a durable carry. Rösti can be vegan when cooked in oil without butter, cheese or egg. Swiss hut food is strongly dairy-led, so vegetarian soup, pasta or gratin still needs a specific check.

What to buy

Shop in Chamonix or Argentière, Verbier, Arolla or Les Haudères, Zinal and St Niklaus or Grächen. Migros V-Love and the Swiss V-Label cover both vegetarian and vegan products, so read the category word. Carry rye bread, Cenovis, nuts, plant protein, breakfast and a cold dinner across hut pairs and the Europaweg. Village shops have much less choice than the valley towns.

Good places on the trail

Le Peuty confirms vegan meals and advance packed lunches. Relais d'Arpette's official TMB booking page confirms that its three-course dinner can be vegan on request, correcting the former unknown grade. Cabane du Mont Fort accepts requests for an adapted menu in the booking message but does not explicitly promise vegan. Cabane de Moiry requires special diets to be declared in the reservation. Prafleuri, Louvie, Hotel Schwarzhorn, Hotel Weisshorn and Europa Hut publish no equivalent vegan policy, so secure a direct answer and carry food. Zinal: La Ferme has recent reports of labelled vegan dishes, but the operator menu does not publish the labelling. Zermatt provides strong town choice at the finish, including advance-request vegan tasting-menu reports and ordinary cafes with vegan items.

Trail treats

Carry a vegan-labelled Swiss chocolate or choose sorbet. Rivella is made from milk whey and is not vegan. Hut pastries and cakes usually need a dairy and egg check.

Where to restock

Eastbound, shop in Chamonix, then Le Châble or Verbier before the first hut pair, Arolla or Les Haudères, Zinal, and St Niklaus or Grächen before the Europaweg. Westbound, reverse the same anchors. Gruben has no general shop and the Europaweg has one fixed-menu hut, so carry two lunches plus an emergency dinner into those stretches. Order vegan packed lunches by the operator deadline.

Things that may not be vegan

Vegetarisch or végétarien permits dairy and egg. Check butter in rösti and vegetables, meat stock in soup, cheese in pasta, honey at breakfast and whey in drinks. A booking note is not a confirmation.

Useful words and questions

French: “Régime végétalien: sans viande, poisson, lait, œufs ni miel.” German: “Vegane Ernährung: ohne Fleisch, Fisch, Milchprodukte, Eier und Honig.” Ask the hut to confirm dinner and Lunchpaket in writing.
