Eating on the trail

Vegan food on the South West Coast Path

Vegan pasties are easy to find, but a balanced evening meal is not automatic over 630 miles. Full-route vegan walkers found frequent hot pastry and occasional gaps in fresh food. Use the larger towns for vegetables, protein and breakfast supplies, verify small kitchens on the day, and keep one no-cook dinner for late arrivals or seasonal closures.

What to expect

Vegan pasties are easy to find, but a balanced evening meal is not automatic over 630 miles. Full-route vegan walkers found frequent hot pastry and occasional gaps in fresh food. Use the larger towns for vegetables, protein and breakfast supplies, verify small kitchens on the day, and keep one no-cook dinner for late arrivals or seasonal closures.

Practical vegan planning

Local food worth trying

Pengenna lists a vegan pasty at its Bude and Tintagel shops, Rowe's makes a vegan pasty in Falmouth, and the Vegan Pasty Company states that its range is made in St Austell. These are dependable local orders when the specific item is labelled. Check cream tea, saffron buns and seaside chips for dairy, lard and beef dripping; if shared oil matters, ask when you order.

What to buy

Plan full shops in Barnstaple or Braunton, Bude, Padstow, Hayle or Penzance, Falmouth, Plymouth, Exmouth and Weymouth. Co-op's current national range is Co-op Plant Based, but small branches stock only part of it. Buy fresh vegetables, plant milk, a protein item and a cold dinner in the large towns. Village stores are top-ups for bread, fruit, tins and snacks.

Good places on the trail

North Devon: the Plant Bar in Barnstaple describes itself as fully plant-based. North Cornwall: Pengenna's operator menu confirms a vegan pasty in Bude and Tintagel; other cafe recommendations come mainly from one full-route vegan couple and should be checked. West Cornwall: their recent account identifies useful stops in Hayle, St Ives, Penzance and Porthleven, with Falmouth the strongest cluster. The Vegan Pasty Company provides operator-confirmed products but is not evidence that every bakery stocks them. South Cornwall and Devon: Plymouth, Exmouth and the larger resorts offer more choice; small coves may have one seasonal cafe. Dorset: Lyme Regis and Weymouth are the main resets, while the Purbeck finish has thinner specialist coverage. Treat walker reports as leads, call the next kitchen when timing is tight, and arrange accommodation dinner before remote stages.

Trail treats

A clearly labelled vegan Cornish pasty is the dependable trail treat. Vegan cream tea and dairy-free gelato are good finds only when the current counter confirms the scone, topping, flavour and cone.

Where to restock

In either direction, reset every few days in the large towns rather than trying to name every village shop. The key carries are Minehead or Barnstaple for Exmoor, Bude for the north Cornwall cliffs, Hayle or Penzance for Land's End, Falmouth for the Roseland, Plymouth for the South Hams, Exmouth for east Devon and Weymouth for Purbeck. Keep a cold dinner when a stage ends in a cove.

Things that may not be vegan

Check lard or butter in pasty pastry, beef dripping in chips, dairy in mash and cream teas, honey in granola or cakes, and fish-based finings in cask beer or cider. If shared oil matters, ask when you order.
