Vegan food is workable, but the carry matters more than the venue count. Grasmere, Kirkby Stephen, Richmond and the finish provide choice; Keld and the moorland stages need advance meal arrangements. Two Dales Bakery confirms vegan options at Reeth, the Lion Inn confirms vegan dishes on Blakey Ridge, and the Victoria confirms vegan dishes at Robin Hood's Bay. Carry a cold emergency dinner.

Practical vegan planning
Local food worth trying
Most Kendal Mint Cake is vegan: the maker confirms every bar except the white-chocolate-coated version, so check the wrapper. At the Lion Inn, order from the dishes currently marked vegan rather than relying on older reviewer lists. Ask about beef dripping in Yorkshire chips; if shared oil matters, ask when you order. Seasonal damson products are a nice Cumbrian extra only when a shop actually has them, not a resupply plan.
What to buy
Kirkby Stephen and Richmond are the key full restocks. Buy plant milk, a protein item and two simple meals there. Grasmere and Shap also have useful shops, while most other stops are village-store top-ups. A robust carry is wraps, nut butter, beans or hummus, nuts, dried fruit, instant couscous and a ready-to-eat dinner. Do not rely on a particular chilled product being present in a small Co-op or Spar.
Good places on the trail
Ennerdale Bridge: The Gather combines a community shop and cafe; ask what is vegan that day. Grasmere: Greens Cafe is a strong third-party vegan lead for daytime food, but vegan evening meals need more planning. Kirkby Stephen: The White Hare has several recent vegan diner reports, including a ploughman's and sausage sandwich, but no operator site, so ring before relying on it. Reeth: Two Dales Bakery says vegan options are on its menu as standard and publishes a Tuesday-to-Saturday pattern. Richmond: use the town's shops; restaurant vegan provision is not operator-confirmed in the current source set. Blakey Ridge: the Lion Inn's own site confirms vegan dishes and long food service; check the current menu and ask about dessert. Robin Hood's Bay: the Victoria says it offers vegan dishes and asks guests to mention requirements when booking.
Trail treats
Carry a plain or plain-chocolate Kendal Mint Cake, avoiding the white-chocolate version. Treat bakery cakes and pub desserts as questions unless they are labelled vegan that day.
Where to restock
West to east: start in St Bees, top up at The Gather, then use Grasmere before the eastern Lakes. Buy two days in Kirkby Stephen because Keld has no general shop and meals there need arranging. Buy two days again in Richmond for the Vale of Mowbray and moors. Blakey Ridge has food but no general resupply. East to west, reverse those carries: leave Robin Hood's Bay or Grosmont supplied for the moors and make Richmond the first large reset.
Things that may not be vegan
Ask about beef dripping for chips and, if shared oil matters, ask when you order. Check dairy in mash and pastry, meat stock in soup and ghee in South Asian dishes. Cask ale may be fined with isinglass. Tell single-kitchen accommodation that you are vegan when booking, not at dinner service.
